I have made this chocolate cake more times than I can count. It’s requested for birthdays, special events, when my daughter comes home from college or just anytime someone has a craving for chocolate!!!
The cake starts with a simple box cake mix but all the extra add-ins take it to another level. The cake is delicious on it’s own, or with a dusting of powdered sugar, but we love it most with this simple chocolate icing drizzled over top!!!
Chocolate Cake
Ingredients
- Vegetable oil spray to mist the pan
- Flour for dusting the pan
- 1 package devil's food cake mix
- 1 package chocolate instant pudding mix
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup sour cream
- ½ cup warm water
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 1 ½ cups semisweet chocolate chips
Chocolate Icing
- 1 cup sugar
- 5 tbsp butter
- ⅓ cup milk
- 3 oz. Unsweetened Baker's chocolate
- 3 oz. Sweetened Baker's chocolate
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350*
- Lightly spray the cake pan with vegetable oil spray and then dust with flour. Shake out excess flour and set the pan aside.
- In a large bowl, combine cake mix, pudding mix, eggs, sour cream, warm water, and oil. Blend with electric mixer until combined.
- Fold in the chocolate chips.
- Bake the cake until is springs back when lightly pressed with your finger and when it starts to pull away from the sides of the pan, about 45-50 minutes.
- Allow to cool slightly in the pan. Then invert onto serving platter. Cool completely before icing.
Chocolate Icing
- Add butter, milk and sugar to medium saucepan.
- Over medium heat, heat until butter is melted. Once it comes to a boil, stir constantly for 1 minute.
- Remove from heat and add chocolate squares. Stir until chocolate squares are melted.
- Spoon over cooled cake. Icing sets up as it cools.
Enjoy!!!
